Zig

Phillip Oosthuizen

As a Senior Lecturer in Industrial Design at the University of Johannesburg, Phillip Oosthuizen spends most of his time educating, developing skills, guiding and nurturing future young designers. "Since school days, I have had a deep-rooted passion for industrial design and I am also fascinated by the ideas that come out of interacting with and guiding fresh, innovative talent". It was therefore, a pleasant and intriguing challenge for him to be able to design a candle holder in keeping with the theme "Flame".

Phillip’s winning item Zig is cast in aluminium and is designed in such a way that a variable number of pieces can be interlocked, thus creating a larger centre piece if needed. "By using a number of holders, the user can create a table-top texture or pattern upon which the flame is displayed. I believe that Zig is a contemporary and sophisticated design that also takes into account the key element of affordability – one candle holder is effective enough to make a statement, while purchasing a number of them will allow the owner to experiment and create various arrangements."
