January 2010: METAL 2010 is the sixth annual New Designer Search pioneered by Carrol Boyes (Pty) Ltd. to discover, encourage and nurture new product design talent in South Africa, from planting the seed of inspiration to witnessing the burgeoning and blossoming of a design idea. METAL invites aspirant designers to submit a prototype based on a specific theme, inspired by originality and innovation. The theme for 2010, “VASE – a lifestyle”, should inspire creative, original prototypes that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing.
Carrol Boyes explains her choice of theme: “Vases are multifunctional objects that have been in vogue for thousands of years. Ancient histories show that vases served both utilitarian and ornamental purposes. Their use was widespread – from storage and transportation of perfumes, oils, honey and wine, to marking and decorating ancient grave sites and tomb offerings”. They formed an integral part of everyday life. Today – vases are specifically selected for practical purposes and for adornment in and enhancement of interiors and exteriors! Contemporary, classical, decorative, functional – they are finely appreciated.”
Entries open 1st January 2010 and close on 30th June 2010. Entrants need not have any particular design experience or qualification to enter METAL. Participants simply have to design and create an innovative three dimensional prototype of a vase and submit it, together with the completed Entry Form, Copy of their ID and a one page CV to Carrol Boyes (Pty) Ltd.
In order to maximize their chances of winning, prospective designers are encouraged to produce work that can be viably manufactured in mainly aluminium, stainless steel or pewter (the trademark Carrol Boyes metals). Prototypes can, however, be assembled using any suitably strong material that is available to the artist, such as resin, wood, glazed ceramics or even wire. Carrol Boyes says: “ In terms of design, I am looking for fresh and original ideas that display the designers unique and special inspirations and which are not derivative in any way of the Carrol Boyes design styles.”
